Lunch Keynote

Veteran's Highlight
(Annette Wholaver, EDD)

Presentation will cover the Veterans Programs under the Employment Development Department Umbrella. Veterans receive priority of service in all Department of Labor funded programs in One-Stop Career Centers or Stand Alone EDD offices. These offices have specially-trained staff to ensure veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces receive maximum employment and training opportunities. As part of Operation Welcome Home, the California EDD has hired a significant number of veterans to serve in the CalVet Corps. CalVet Corps members have been deployed throughout the state to help veterans learn about the benefits and services available to them. Veterans may also participate in the Veterans Intensive Program (VIP) that is overseen by Local Veterans Employment Representative (LVER) and Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) staff. The desired outcome from the VIP services is to bring a client to an employment and/or training goal. Some of the success stories of the veterans and employers who have participated in the Operation Welcome Home Program will also be shared.

9:30am & 10:45am Breakout Sessions

Wellness Programs
(Amber Anderson, Gallagher Benefit Services)

The essence of a Wellness Program is to promote healthy lifestyle initiatives such as smoking cessation, on-site gyms, education materials, and much more. While some businesses have instituted very comprehensive wellness programs, others have achieved savings or increased productivity with just a few simple activities that promote healthy behaviors. What’s most important is to commit to Wellness promotion in your organization and get started. This session will provide guidance on promoting workplace wellness, using incentives, wellness sample materials, wellness program ideas, and education.

Performance Management
(Dr. Rudy Sanchez, CSUF)

The phrase “performance management” can strike fear in all employees, including organizational leaders. The performance appraisal process has so often been mismanaged that some experts have called for the elimination of performance appraisals in the workplace. In this interactive session, we will discuss several evidence-based strategies to effectively link performance management practices, employee engagement, and organizational strategy. Effectively managing employee performance is essential to moving forward in today’s workforce reality.

U-I Claims Management
(Jeffrey Burmeister, TALX Corporation)

Session will focus on the basics of unemployment to include an economic update, a review of how the system works, and practical tips on how to reduce and control unemployment costs.

1:30pm & 2:45pm Breakout Sessions

Social Media
(Patrick Moody, Barsamian & Moody)

The session will cover issues related to the ever-expanding impact that social media has in the workplace. What hazards does it entail? Can it lead to litigation? (Yes) How can an employer control it? What personnel policies should you consider?

Aging Parents & Work/Life Balance
(Jackie Ryle, Ryle Resources/Empowerment Strategies)

Work/Life Balance Session will cover today’s rapidly increasing demand on our time, skills and patience that is required to balance our work, home, civic and leisure lives. How do we give our best in each area and keep our physical and mental health? This intensive workshop explores methods and techniques to achieve balance as we give and get and be the best we can be.

Stress & Depression In The Workplace
(Shirley Baker, Alliant University)

Stress and Depression Session will cover the result of current economic pressures creating stress and depression in our working environment. We can reduce the stress caused by applying steps that develop improved working environments. By understanding different processing styles, office interactions become more comfortable, ideas are expressed in more relevant ways, and customer and co-worker interactions improve. Use the same strategies that are employed by Major Corporations to improve your working environment.
